"This swell was spawned from a storm that rapidly deepened north of Hawaii on January 29th. As it moved into the Gulf of Alaska through the end of the month winds in excess of 50 knots and seas of 40 feet were recorded over a fairly wide fetch. The large, long-period swell moved into Northern California and rapidly built over the afternoon on Friday, February 1st. Conditions weren't ideal, but they weren't too bad either: light to moderate NW wind behind a passing cold front had a bit of a bump on the water, but the regions protected from that wind saw great surf."

| Opening Day: Maverick's |
Eric Nelson and Curt Meyers over at Powerlines Productions have been on every single Maverick's swell since like the beginning of time.
They were on hand this year to catch Opening Day, Wednesday, October 10th, at California's best big wave. It was a little wobbly, to be sure, and not quite death-defying Mav's, but it was breaking on the bowl, there were some clean-up sets, and a few people were able to get an early notch in. |

Drollett, who won the 2005 trials event, managed to beat Anthony Walsh in the final with a stunning 19.13. "I'm glad I made it on a day like this," Drollett said. "This is what it's all about." |

| The day after Valentine's Day pumped the most love of the season to the Banzai Pipeline. Second and Third Reef bombs blew through creating some ginormous barrels and horrendous wipeouts. All the boys were on it... or at least trying to be. After all, Pipeline can surely be a heartbreaker. |

| DUNGEON'S GOES OFF |
Just after this year's red Bull Big Wave Africa contest, South Africa's most famous big wave went beyond XXL for local and visiting big-wave chargers. Greg Long and Grant "Twiggy" Baker towed each other into some monsters, while the rest of the hellmen enjoyed what Grant Washburn called, "a session for the ages with an incredible crew, a magical vibe."
